I posted his older piece because I found it an interesting contrast to the Rushdie, in which he is represented quite differently. The point I was trying to make is that religious perspectives evolve and change over time, and this piece exactly focussed on that.

And there may be better more recent pieces he has... but this served my purpose. Thanks for the comment.

I liked Shabbir Akhtar's piece, but I can't see why you re-posted something from 1997. Surely he has more recent publications. Why not find them?

Ha, brings back memories when I hurried hard to the Cobalt Haileybury Curling Club. Curling was, however, not my sport of choice. I preferred basketball, baseball, tennis, golf, skiing, hiking etc. and later on learned to love squash.
There's a sisterhood that develops between women athletes, that I am sure exists as a brotherhood for men, but women take it to another level.

I just learned the name of the condition that my cat has. He has extra toes and that condition is called,'polydactylism'.How cool is that. I love it.
Those toes are funny looking and a novely to view, but attached to them are extra claws to be wary of.
Thanks Tikkunista!

I think the last sports team I was on was at Cobalt high school (curling skip, ftw).
But I've done a lot of work on a matriarchal spiritual path (1st nation, basically :-) I've been deeply moved at the power of relationship between the women I've met on this path. While I suspect that the difference between the genders might be far less than most people believe (and of course each of us is at a different point on a number of sprectrums (spectra?)) as we were raised in this culture we battle different templates.
Glad you liked the writing too! The opening piece about the 9 y.o. and her hijab is another very fine piece.

Absolutely beautiful piece of writing. I have long known the value of my women friends. They are bed rocks, to be counted on when the going gets tough. And they are tough when the going gets rough.
As a member of several all-woman sport teams over the years, it became apparent to me that my teammates were always going to hold a special place in my heart. As my friends. Women have the power of love within them and there's nothing that cannot be overcome when you have a team of lovely women working together, side by side.
So many women around the world are facing life and death situations and its those women we can help support through various not-for-profit aid organizations. When one women is educated, she educates a family. Please help support women in your community who may be victims of domestic violence, line up at food banks with their kids in tow etc. We can so so much for each other because we understand the power of love.

In regards to the Tough Guy 2012 story: I think those competitors are chasing some primal instinct in themselves. I thought the quality of the images was fantastic, especially the one where the men were climbing the cargo net in Perton. In particular the thonged competitor. But why? We live boring lives indeed when people have to subject themselves to that type of punishment, or I mean competition.

Sam Delany talks about how sexuality (in our Western culture) is seen as a noun for women and a verb for men. So women's sexuality can be hidden (niqab), sold (dowry), preserved (virginity) and stolen (rape). None of those categories have the same power for men.
